While we are all for pushing ourselves outside of our comfort zone and trying a new class or studio, we recognize the importance of having a place to practice yoga, meditate, or do whatever you need to do, in the comfort of your own home. With our guide, you will be able to create a calming and joyful sanctuary within the space you already have!
Here is our complete compilation of everything you need to consider when starting to physically create your own at home ‘studio’.
The first question you must ask yourself when starting to build your ‘studio’ is: what is the purpose of this space? Is it somewhere where you will come to find mental clarity and connect with yourself? Somewhere you will get your work done? Somewhere to practice yoga, self guided breathwork sessions, or meditate? Maybe it is somewhere to simply find some peace and quiet. Your purpose can be one of these options, or all of these options! Either way, having a goal will be important in deciding the energy of your space.
Once you have nailed down what you want to happen in your ‘studio’, it's time for the fun part – designing! If you already know exactly what you want your space to look like, what are you waiting for? Bring your vision to life (and don’t forget to send us pics)! If you have no idea where to begin, this is where we come in. We want to help you to build a custom space that brings you joy and fits your specific needs!
Let’s start with lighting. A corner of your house with loads of natural sunlight or a dark room with candles for ambiance? You pick! Both options would be perfect as long as you have room for a yoga mat, a cute rug, or a small desk and stool. Once again – this choice should come back to your purpose for this space.
Next, what items belong in your ‘studio’? Photographs of your favorite people or places, candles, crystals, shells, rocks, talismans, plants, or anything else that brings you good energy and comfort are the way to go. You can fill your space to the brim, or you can leave it as empty as you please. If your space is meant for distressing and clearing brain fog, maybe consider less stimulating items.
When thinking about the sounds of your ‘studio’, first and foremost, ask yourself if you need complete silence. This could be a determining factor in where in your house you want to set up your space. If silence is not what you are looking for, you have two options: a speaker or an open window. With a speaker, you have the ability to switch up your vibe easily from meditation music to rain sounds to your favorite artist! If you are looking for a more natural solution to noise, considering a spot with an open window could help connect you to the outdoors.
Another aspect of your space to consider: smells! Setting up your favorite candles, burning incense, or gathering fresh flowers or plants will help enhance the energy of your ‘studio’ significantly.
If you are planning to do yoga in your ‘studio’, be sure to have room to move around. Having an air con or a fan accessible might not be a bad idea – unless you love hot yoga! Don’t forget your mat, blocks, straps, bolsters, and all other gear you may need to strengthen your at home practice.
After you have successfully designed and brought your space to life, it is time to put it to use! Here are a few tips we have for practicing at home:
Consistency is key. Establishing a specific time will help implement your practice into your daily routine.
Set intentions. Why do you want to make your practice a habit?
Prioritize yourself. It doesn’t matter if you have hours or only fifteen minutes in your day, getting in the habit of practicing whatever it is you love will make a significant difference in your mental and physical health.
Listen to your body. You know what is best for you.
The most important part of your at home ‘studio’ is that it is entirely yours. What we mean by that is you have created a space that motivates you to work on your practice and on yourself, makes you feel comfortable being vulnerable, and brings you joy. After all, you are the essence, the driving force, of your ‘studio’.
We would love to see the creative spaces you bring together. Be sure to DM or email us at kohcollective@yogakoh.com with pictures of your ‘studio’!
Happy practicing!
